The mobile home that Nancy Lugo and her two children live in might not seem like much to many people.
It sits off a dirt road, by a slow-moving creek, on the outskirts of the tiny Georgia town of Uvalda. It is surrounded by thick forest and fields full of the local speciality: Vidalia onions.
Now it is all under threat.

ITUC Statement on Human Rights Day
Fundamental human rights are under attack in every region of the world, and respect for workers’ rights in particular is being undermined as working people are increasingly forced to bear the burden of the global economic crisis, in contravention of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other UN and International Labour Organisation instruments.

On this day, International Human Rights Day, life under absolute dictatorship remains the reality for tens of millions of people, in Burma, North Korea and many other countries while the international community lacks the capacity, or the will, to make human rights and democracy truly universal.

Trade union leaders and workers at Foxconn India imprisoned

The ITUC has protested to the Indian authorities over the continued imprisonment of 12 union leaders and workers in Vellore central prison. Criminal cases have been filed against trade union leaders and workers at a Foxconn plant located in a Special Economic Zone in Chennai, after they took strike action for union recognition and better wages.

Some 1,200 workers have been involved in weeks of struggle to get their union recognised by the management of Foxconn and to negotiate wages rises and other demands. The workers are members of the Foxconn India Thozhilalar Sangam (FITS), affiliated to the Center for Indian Trade Unions (CITU).

The French parliament has narrowly given its approval to the pension reforms which have caused a wave of strikes, demonstrations and protests across France, leading to traffic chaos and petrol shortages.
The senate voted 177 to 153 to approve measures including a rise in the official retirement age from 60 to 62. The lower house, the national assembly, had earlier given its assent.
The vote came after the right-of-centre government of President Nicolas Sarkozy used emergency clauses in the constitution to push through the reforms. The reforms had stalled in the senate after opposition members tabled hundreds of amendments leading to three weeks of debate.

Denied work permit, 500,000 foreigners working illegally in Turkey

Many Chinese workers are employed by Turkish mine and construction companies because they will work for lower salaries.
Many Chinese workers are employed by Turkish mine and construction companies because they will work for lower salaries. According to the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, the Turkish state annually gives work permits for nearly 10,000 workers, but it is known that there are still around 500,000 foreigners who are working without work permits since the ministry is reluctant to sanction employment for foreign workers.
Recent remarks by Minister of Labor and Social Security Ömer Dinçer, who complained about requests from some companies for work permits for their Chinese workers employed in Turkey, once again brought Turkey's foreign worker issue to the agenda. “When unemployment is one of the main problems in Turkey and when the same job can be done by a person in Turkey, it would be injustice for our citizens to allow foreigners to work in those jobs,” said Dinçer on Wednesday. The minister said more and more business owners have been requesting that the ministry grant work permits to their Chinese workers. In response to these petitions, Dinçer said the ministry's excuse was that each of the jobs given to Chinese workers could be done by workers in Turkey.

Merkel's Ongoing Fight to Extend Coal Subsidies

Berlin Takes on Brussels

dpa

The European Commission has decided to end coal subsidies by 2014, a decision which does not sit well with Chancellor Angela Merkel. She wants Europe to revisit the decision, but support is lacking. Even her own economics minister is standing in the way. By SPIEGEL Staff
When Chancellor Angela Merkel sees Economics Minister Rainer Brüderle at her weekly cabinet meetings on Wednesdays, it quickly becomes clear that the relationship between the two politicians is marked by distrust. Some time ago Brüderle, a member of the pro-business Free Democratic Party (FDP), ignored an important call from the chancellor on his mobile phone, a move which didn't exactly improve an already frosty relationship.
The relationship is likely to sink to a new low in the coming weeks. Once again, there are disagreements over energy policy. In the wake of the debate over the future of nuclear power, the government must now address what is to become of Germany's coal industry. There are no indications that the wrangling will produce an outcome that the government will be able to portray as a victory.

Each man emerged to the surface, blinking and grinning, after being winched up a narrow, claustrophobic, 622m shaft in scenes which matched the moon landings for drama. The rest were expected out by tonight.

Another sunset over Camp Hope, and as temperatures dropped the Avalos family huddled closer to the fire, savouring the heat while the wood and charcoal lasted. Sparks fizzed and died in the inky blackness.
Everything has changed. This improvised settlement of miners' relatives, once a desolate wasteland fearing the worst, is now the focus of a nation's euphoria. A lonely vigil has become a crowded, giddy countdown to the party of a lifetime.

Massive Protest March in Brussels Rejects European Austerity Plans

More than 100,000 trade unionists from throughout Europe took to the streets of Brussels today to oppose austerity measures which, if governments do not change direction, will have disastrous social and economic results.

Parallel national protests taking place across Europe include a general strike in Spain, and demonstrations in Italy, France, Portugal, Lithuania, Latvia, Germany, Cyprus, Serbia, Poland , Finland and Ireland. Protests already held in Bucharest and Prague brought together more than 20,000 and 40,000 people respectively. John Monks, General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation which organised the Brussels march, said “Trade unionism is on an unstoppable march for progress, equality and justice, determined to build from the debris of the current crisis, a new, better society where those who are too big to fail cannot be allowed to continue to ignore those who they have regarded as too small to matter.”
