Brave New World, Brave New Majority

by ALEXANDER COCKBURN

The news is in. White births are no longer a majority in the United States. The Bureau of the Census confirms that non-Hispanic whites accounted for 49.6 of all births  in the year ending July,  2011, while minorities including Hispanics, blacks, Asians and those of mixed race — reached 50.4 percent.

I felt lonely and went out on the porch and hollered for my neighbor, a white German-American.  Nothing stirred. I went back to my computer. At least someone is thinking constructively. The World Wildlife Fund says we need two planets.  The rationale is that we create too much waste for one, but the roots of American environmentalism were always nourished by dislike of  “those of mixed race”, and some over there at WWF has got their thinking cap on.

Is whitey ready for a fresh start? Face it, we may be a minority, but we got the firepower.

Where did we go wrong? Too much atonal music, maybe. Richard Pryor probably put his finger on it. Pryor to a white audience:

“What the matter, y’all stop fuckin’?  There will be no shortage of niggers.  Niggers is fuckin’.”

Mitt Romney outlines upcoming campaign against Barack Obama after comfortably winning clean sweep of five US primaries

Having secured victory in the five latest Republican primaries, Mitt Romney has launched his campaign as the party's presumptive presidential nominee.

Tuesday's wins in Connecticut, Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island put the former Massachusetts governor in a nearly unbeatable position with 824 of the 1,144 delegates needed to be declared his party's nominee.

Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul lag behind with 137 and 79 delegates, respectively.

As Rick Santorum quits the Republican nomination race, we examine the legacy of his candidacy on the party.

Mitt Romney's bid for the Republican presidential nomination is now all but assured following Rick Santorum's abrupt departure from the race on Tuesday.
Romney still faces challenges from Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul, but neither are considered serious challengers. Gingrich is running on a shoestring budget and is in debt. And although Ron Paul still draws large crowds to town hall meetings, he is not picking up many delegates.

Romney: Why It’s OK to Stick It to Him for Being a Mormon

by ALEXANDER COCKBURN

Mitt Romney will be the Republican to face President Obama in the fall.  Tuesday night was the clincher, as the Mormon zealot won in Wisconsin, Maryland and Washington DC. He may stumble on, but the Catholic zealot Rick Santorum is finished.
It’s hard to detect any alluring feature in Romney’s psychic or political make-up, and I’m none too sure about Ann  Romney, who at this stage of the game is filling the role played by the late Elizabeth  Edwards in the Edwards campaign on its upward trajectory back in early 2008.

The Real Nuclear Outlaws

How the US and Israel are Shredding the NPT

by CARL BOGGS While United States and Israeli leaders, duly assisted by a warmongering media, ramp up war talk against Iran, two troublesome pieces of information are ritually ignored. First, even American intelligence reports conclude that Iran is not close to building a nuclear-weapons program. Second, it is the U.S. and Israel – not Iran – that stand in flagrant violation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). The real nuclear outlaws are located in Washington and Tel Aviv rather than in Tehran. The consensus of 17 U.S. agencies, as reported by National Intelligence Estimates of 2007 and 2011, finds that Iran has not enriched uranium above 20 percent purity, far short of the nearly 90 percent essential to weapons development.

Texas governor ends presidential bid, endorsing Newt Gingrich for Republican nomination ahead of South Carolina vote

Perry placed high in initial polling when he entered the race in August but has since lost much support [GALLO/GETTY]

Rick Perry has withdrawn from the race for the Republican US presidential nomination and endorsed Newt Gingrich as the best man to take on Barack Obama in November's election.
The Texas governor ended his campaign at a news conference on Thursday in North Charleston, South Carolina, where the remaining four candidates are later due to participate in a televised debate prior to Saturday's primary vote.
"I have come to the conclusion that there is no viable path forward for me in this 2012 campaign. Therefore today I am suspending my campaign and endorsing Newt Gingrich for president of the United States," Perry said.
"The journey leads me back to Texas, neither discouraged nor disenchanted.
"We must rise to the occasion and elect a conservative candidate to put this country back on track," he said, referring to Gingrich. "Newt is not perfect, but who among us is?"

US Marines probe video of men urinating on Taliban corpses

REUTERS, WASHINGTON
The US Marine Corps said on Wednesday it would investigate a video showing what appear to be American forces in Afghanistan urinating on the bodies of dead Taliban fighters.
The video could aggravate anti-American sentiment in Afghanistan after a decade of a war that has seen other cases of abuse. The Marine video release comes at a sensitive moment, with Washington trying to promote Afghan reconciliation as US troops gradually withdraw from the country.
The video, which was posted on YouTube and other websites, shows four men in camouflage Marine combat uniforms urinating on three corpses.
One of them jokes: "Have a nice day, buddy."  Another makes a lewd joke."While we have not yet verified the origin or authenticity of this video, the actions portrayed are not consistent with our core values and are not indicative of the character of the Marines in our Corps," the Marines said in a statement.

State and corporate actors everywhere are learning how to repress protesters while maintaining democratic facades

Prime Minister David Cameron has allowed departures from Britain's traditional policing practices [GALLO/GETTY]

New York, NY - What does the New Year hold for the global wave of protest that erupted in 2011? Did the surge of anger that began in Tunisia crest in lower Manhattan, or is 2012 likely to see an escalation of the politics of dissent?
The answers are alarming, but quite predictable: We are likely to see much greater centralisation of top-down suppression - and a rash of laws around the developed and developing world that restrict human rights. But we are also likely to see significant grassroots reaction.
What we are witnessing in the drama of increasingly globalised protest and repression is the subplot that many cheerleaders for neoliberal globalisation never addressed: the power of globalised capital to wreak havoc with the authority of democratically elected governments. From the perspective of global corporate interests, closed societies like China are more business-friendly than troublesome democracies, where trade unions, high standards of human-rights protection, and a vigorous press increase costs.

The Future of the Occupy Movement

Birthing a New Society

The Occupy Movement, which has already been hugely successful in thrusting issues of inequality and corporate power into the public discourse, faces a critical juncture. As many of the larger encampments in New York, Oakland, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles are shut down by the police, activists have been searching for the tactics to move beyond Occupation to Phase 2 of the movement. Some say that the movement now should evolve into the political arena, supporting policy ideas, running candidates for office, and putting pressure on politicians and corporations. Similarly, others argue that the next step is to develop a specific list of demands, which presumably could further policy initiatives and protests.

US president tells China to start behaving more responsibly on currency and trade issues at conclusion of APEC summit

Obama warns that China must abide by international rules before it can become a partner in free trade [Reuters]

US President Barack Obama has pressed China to recognise it is now a "grown up" economy and start behaving more responsibly on currency and trade issues hurting US companies.
China needs "to understand that their role is different now than it might have been 20 years ago or 30 years ago when if they were breaking some rules it didn't really matter, it didn't have a significant impact," Obama said at the conclusion of the Asia-Pacific economic summit (APEC) in Hawaii on Sunday.
Obama said that China must abide by international rules before it can become a partner in free trade.
He added that China had not done enough to re-value its currency and said Beijing's economic policies had disadvantaged the US.

Fidel Castro califica a Obama de "tonto"

El expresidente cubano Fidel Castro. / EFE

US hawks have used the deaths of innocent Americans as justification for foreign intervention

Twin Towers

Two years from now the staffs of Vanity Fair and the New Yorker will move into the most haunted building in the world.  There, the elite of American celebrity photographers, gossip columnists, and magazine journalists may meet some macabre new muses.
Aloft in the upper stories of 1 World Trade Center (where Condé Nast publishing has signed the biggest lease), they will gaze out their windows at that ghostly void, just a few yards away, where 658 doomed employees of Cantor Fitzgerald were sitting at their desks at 8:46 AM, September 11, 2001.
Not to worry: The “Freedom Tower” - the boosters reassure us - will be an enduring consolation to the families of 9/11’s martyrs as well as an icon of civic and national renaissance. Not to mention its dramatic resurrection of property values in the neighbourhood.  (I confess that I find this conflation of real-estate speculation with sublime memorial unnerving: like proposing to build a yacht marina over the sunken Arizona or a Katrina theme park in the Lower Ninth Ward.)
One World Trade Center, in the original design, was also meant to restore vertical architectural supremacy to Manhattan and to be the tallest building in the world.  This global phallic rivalry was won instead by Dubai’s Burj Khalifa super-tower, completed last year and twice as high as the Empire State Building.
In a few years Dubai, however, will have to surrender the gold cup to Saudi Arabia and the bin Laden family.
